Core Courses
All of us have core areas that we need to work on. These are the most common areas in most adults' lives and that are suggested by National Core Indicators (a national effort to measure and improve the performance of public developmental disabilities agencies). These classes meet the goals in your plans of care and we work on them daily.
Health & Wellness
Topics include the importance physical & mental health, nutrition, managing illnesses, first aid, healthy relationships and more!
Exercise
We all need to exercise more, right? But here at North Star, we not only use fitness equipment, but consider yoga, dance and sports under this category!
Life Skills
From cooking to cleaning, home safety and maintenance, we'll cover those topics you need to live independently.
Personal & Social Development
Communication and social skills are the most vital skills we all need! But we'll also address self-determination and self-advocacy.
Continuing Education
Here we offer a wide range of course topics from computer skills to STEM courses, math and literacy.
Digital Life
How to use technology to enhance your life from exchanging phone numbers and phone etiquette to hosting your own Zoom party!
Elective Courses
We offer a wide variety of activities that include those below, but are only limited by your imagination! If we find you have a new interest or want to develop a new skill, let's try it!
Arts & Crafts
Using activities from the field of art therapy, this is not your usual arts and crafts group! We might try woodworking one week and pottery the next! We'll introduce new and help you develop your existing skills, talents and interests!
Music & Drama
Music is fun and gives us great opportunities to practice a wide variety of social skills. Drama gives us the chance to explore a wide variety of skills from reading to set building and costume design!!
Photography
Learn the basics of photography and show the world to everyone as you see it!
We supply the digital cameras for you to use!
Next Chapter Book Club
This is an international book club founded at the Nisonger Center at The Ohio State University and is fully inclusive in the community. It is designed for those who love reading as well as those who are non-readers. More than a book club: it is a social opportunity for people who happen to love to share books and stories!
