Quality of life is not just a feeling—it can be understood, supported, and measured. Research-based Quality of Life frameworks identify key areas that contribute to a fulfilling life, including independence, self-determination, relationships, community inclusion, rights, and emotional, physical, and material well-being. At North Star, we believe that when we intentionally create opportunities and provide meaningful support in these areas, people can improve their quality of life in measurable ways. Our goal is not simply to keep people busy—it is to help people grow, make choices, build relationships, participate in their communities, and create lives that are meaningful to them.

For decades, research has identified evidence-based practices that effectively support people with disabilities in learning, communicating, building independence, developing relationships, and participating more fully in their communities. These approaches include strategies such as modeling, visual supports, reinforcement, prompting, task analysis, social skills instruction, functional communication training, and technology-aided instruction. At North Star, we do more than provide activities—we train our staff to intentionally use proven strategies to engage participants, teach meaningful skills, and provide the right level of support for each person. By combining evidence-based practices with person-centered support, our staff can meet people where they are, build on their strengths, and help them make meaningful progress toward the lives they want to lead.
